{"id":55,"date":"2013-04-08T03:27:11","date_gmt":"2013-04-08T03:27:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.williamtipper.com\/?p=55"},"modified":"2013-04-08T03:27:51","modified_gmt":"2013-04-08T03:27:51","slug":"news-from-the-econo-genetic-divide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.williamtipper.com\/?p=55","title":{"rendered":"News from the Econo-Genetic Divide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/travel.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/07\/travel\/professional-conferences-double-as-vacation-venues.html?pagewanted=3&#038;pagewanted=all\">In which it&#8217;s revealed<\/a> that TED, SXSW and suchlike are really all breeding experiments designed to generate a race of Master Hipsters to benevolently rule us all.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dan Gould, 35, who has attended Renaissance Weekends, TED, EG (Entertainment Gathering) and a number of other conferences said they are self-selecting for people who have big ideas and want to change the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re not going to easily find someone like that on OkCupid or in a bar,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have people who have similar values and who care about the same sorts of things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Gould, a founder of the video sharing site Chill.com, had heard of couples who met at one conference or another, but he never gave it much thought \u2014 until he met a woman at TED. They happened to be seated near each other during a talk and, as is common at TED, they continued to bump into each other throughout the four-day conference.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As Kathryn Irwin, who first attended SXSW in 1994 and hasn\u2019t missed a year since 2000, put it: \u201cThere\u2019s been some babies, there\u2019s been a lot of dating, and a lot of hooking up.\u201d Not necessarily in that order.
